Call to Artists: Art to Be Reproduced on Elevator Doors at the Civic Center and Library, Deadline: Feb. 10

"Bridge of Love" by William Hernandez, installed on the 1st floor elevators of the Hillsboro Civic Center in spring 2020.

The City of Hillsboro wants to create a welcoming entry to City services. Vibrant artwork on the doors of the elevators of the Civic Center and Brookwood Library will showcase the City’s creative spirit and welcome its diverse community. The central elevators are at the active core of City Hall, with thousands of people coming and going. Waiting at the elevators, people have the time to enjoy the artwork. Half of Civic Center visitors each year enter the building through the elevators on the parking level, where the artwork will be added, making this a welcoming entrance. The Brookwood Library regularly has over 60,000 visitors per month and strives to welcome our diverse community with the motto “For Everyone/Para Todos,” which should be reflected in the design for the library elevator doors.

Two artists will be selected to create artwork for these sites. The artwork can be in any medium that can be reproduced as a vinyl wrap on the elevator doors. The Civic Center has three sets of doors on one floor and the library has 2 doors on 2 separate floors. The commission to each artist is $2,400 for the Civic Center or $1,600 for the Library, inclusive of all costs to design the artwork. Reproduction costs will be paid by the City. All artists in Oregon and SW Washington are welcome to apply.

SELECTION PROCESS

Artists should submit up to 5 images of past artwork and a paragraph describing their concept for the doors. Artists may choose to apply for the Civic Center doors, the Library doors, or both, but should submit separate concepts for each site if they apply for both. After the artists are chosen, they will be asked to create work specifically for the elevator doors. The artists will be given the proportions and layout of the doors, and their artwork will be reproduced to fit the doors.

BUDGET

Selected artists will receive a fee of $2,400 to create the design for the Civic Center (3 doors) or

$1,600 for the Library (2 doors).
