Dreamers of Oregon: Out of the Shadows Returns to Hillsboro
(Hillsboro, Ore.) — As part of Hillsboro’s First Tuesday Art Walk on August 7, 5 – 8 pm, the Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 E. Main St., Hillsboro) presents the group exhibition Contemplative Landscapes, featuring the work of Evelyn Fritz, Victoria Shepherd, Katherine McDowell, and Peter Peterson.
Contemplative Landscapes features four artists whose work depicts the abstracted landscape. Working in a range of media, the artists coax unexpected perspectives out of color and form. From kaleidoscopic forests and sand-textured surfaces to foggy encaustic vistas and color fields inspired by the reflective surface of mountain lakes, these artists capture the mood, imagination, and possibilities of the natural world rendered abstractly. Contemplative Landscapes will be on view through September 21.
The Walters also welcomes back to Hillsboro Dreamers of Oregon: Out of the Shadows, a traveling exhibition telling the stories of DACA participants through image and narrative. The exhibition features photography by Holly Andres, graphic design by Jeff Proctor, and storytelling by Nelda Reyes. Dreamers of Oregon has been exhibited previously at the Hillsboro Civic Center, Pacific University’s Health Sciences campus in Hillsboro, and Portland City Hall.
Portland Opera’s mobile venue, Opera a la Cart, will present a selection of arias, duets and ensemble pieces, beginning at 6:30 pm. Additionally, visitors to the Walters will be able to participate in arts activities for all ages throughout the building, including: music by guitarist Joseph Aloia; a pop-up shop featuring ceramics, reproductions and originals by participating artists; art-making activities for the whole family led by Walters’ staff; a printmaking demo with Katherine McDowell; and a Q&A with exhibiting artists. Complimentary refreshments will be provided, including light sweets from our sponsor, Decadent Creations.
The First Tuesday Art Walk is free, open to the public, and takes place on the first Tuesday of every month throughout Downtown Hillsboro from 5 – 8 pm. Exhibitions at the Walters Cultural Arts Center are open Monday through Thursday from 9 am – 9 pm, and Friday from 9 am – 5 pm. The Walters is located at 527 E. Main St. and is situated on the corner of Northeast Fifth Avenue and East Main Street in a one way grid in downtown Hillsboro. Parking can be accessed from either Fifth or Sixth Avenues, and the Walters is conveniently located just two blocks off the MAX Blue line.
