(Hillsboro, Ore.) — October is Hillsboro Arts Month, kicking off with a day of music and entertainment at ArtFest on the Plaza, September 22, 9 am – 1:30 pm, at the Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza in Hillsboro.
Taking place during the downtown Hillsboro Farmers’ Market, ArtFest on the Plaza is a free, family-friendly event to begin a month filled with art and culture activities throughout Hillsboro. ArtFest will feature scheduled performances by local organizations and individuals, including Ballet Fiesta, storyteller Holly Robinson, The Westside Youth Choir, Hula Halau ‘Ohana Holo’oko’a, magic with Rudy Tinoco, a jazz ensemble from Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra, New Vision Dance, HART Theater, and local musician Normal Fauna.
Along with performances, visitors will be invited to watch artist demonstrations from Sequoia Gallery and the Washington County Open Studios Tour, participate in hands-on art and craft projects hosted by community cultural organizations, and enjoy free popcorn and street magic while planning out Arts Month activities.
Following the ArtFest on the Plaza, Hillsboro Arts Month takes place during the month of October. Arts Month is an initiative of the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council, and aims to engage City residents by highlighting the arts and culture community. This year’s Arts Month includes more than 60 events, exhibits, and classes produced by local arts and cultural organizations, including theater, music, dance, visual art, history, and literary events. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a fun date night (Bag&Baggage’s production of Deathtrap or Skybound Blue in concert at the Walters), an inspiring outing with a friend (the Hillsboro Reads Keynote or the Washington County Open Studios Tour), or some quality family time (Family Art Night or Stages’ production of And Then There Were None.)
This year, Arts Month participants will have the chance to earn prizes with the Arts Month Experience Card. Cards will be available at ArtFest on the Plaza or at the Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 East Main Street) throughout the month. Participants can show their card at participating events during Art Month and receive a sticker. Upon collecting stickers from four events and returning the card to the Walters Cultural Arts Center, participants will receive a coupon for a free cup of tea, cider, or hot chocolate from Perks of Art (384 E Main Street) and be entered to win prizes including theater and concert tickets, books, and gift certificates to downtown restaurants. Prize winners will be announced during the November 6 First Tuesday Art Walk at the Walters.
