“Eleeomosynary” follows the delicate relationship of three generations of super-articulate women: an eccentric grandmother; her daughter who has run from her overpowering mother; and the extraordinarily intelligent granddaughter. The three women, whose names – Dorothea, Artemis and Echo – were deliberately chosen by the playwright from Greek mythology, shape each other’s identity – for better or worse.
Lee Blessing, the playwright, is a prolific American author best known for A Walk in the Woods and last season’s UnMasked presentation of Two Rooms. His comment about the title is ““Don’t think you know what I’m about. I will tell you in my own good time.” You have to see the show!
Director Dan Hobbs has found three exceptional actresses to portray these characters: Jenny Newbry as Echo, Katy Philp as Artemis, and Kathleen Silloway as Dorothea, all of whom have extensive local production credits.
Dan Hobbs, who has been active in all aspects of community theatre for over 35 years, says, “The first time I read ‘Eleemosynary’ I wanted to direct it. The depth and humanity of the characters, the play’s nimble skips through time, the comedic touches that keep this play dancing on its toes – I was captivated!”
Mask & Mirror UnMasked was started to present unique plays of merit not usually produced by all-volunteer, non-profit community theatre, especially plays that are edgy: having a bold, provocative, or unconventional quality. Shows are staged in The Tualatin Heritage Center in partnership with The Tualatin Historical Society. UnMasked shows are funded in part by grants from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County, the Oregon Cultural Trust, and The Tualatin Arts Advisory Committee.
Mask & Mirror Community Theatre is finishing its 7th season of presenting high quality and affordable (no tickets are more than $15) live theatre to the citizens of Tigard and Tualatin – using all-volunteer actors, stage crew and administrators.
Participation and membership is open to all. We welcome experienced performers and theatre “wannabes” – we’ll train you!
