With a stunning repertoire that rivals that of major professional orchestras, Portland Youth Philharmonic is known for excellent and adventurous performances bringing together the region’s finest emerging musicians. Portland Youth Philharmonic’s chamber orchestra, Camerata PYP, closes out the Walters 2018-19 Concert Series with an afternoon of music at the Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 E. Main St., Hillsboro) on Saturday, May 18, at 2:00 p.m. “America’s first youth symphony is a boon to our young community,” says Portland Monthly. Tickets for this performance are $5 advance or $8 the day of show.
Based in Portland’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Camerata PYP and conductor David Hattner come to Hillsboro with an all new program specifically created for the Walters Concert Series. The matinee performance will feature a diverse group of composers to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Hillsboro and Washington County. Program highlights include compositions and arrangements by Chinese-American Zhou Long, A.R. Rahman of India, Carlos Chávez, founder and director of the Mexican Symphonic Orchestra, and Venezuelan-Spanish composer Giancarlo Castro D’Addona.
Hattner, who also serves as Musical Director, welcomes and invites audiences of all ages to experience live symphonic music. “We hope to see people in the audience who have never attended an orchestra concert before,” he says. “We welcome local residents, especially anyone who has never heard of PYP before, to get to know this unique orchestra made up of young musicians who were mostly born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, but whose families come from many diverse cultures and backgrounds.” Music lovers of all ages and backgounds will be stirred, delighted, and impressed by the accomplished musicians of the Portland Youth Philharmonic.
