The City of Tigard has commissioned muralist MJ Lindo-Lawyer to create two murals as part of a collection of large public works at the new Tigard Outdoor Museum. Both murals contain references to historic cultures, local wildlife, and water and will face one another, creating an immersive experience for residents. Lindo-Lawyer will begin painting in mid-May and hopes to be complete by the end of the month.
Lindo-Lawyer is a professional muralist with an extensive portfolio of large-scale works between California and Mexico. Her works are inspired by the communities surrounding the mural sites, making her the perfect match for the Outdoor Museum project which seeks to highlight and bring awareness to the experiences of historically-marginalized communities. Lindo-Lawyer created her compositions after a period of intensive research into local histories, leveraging support from Five Oaks Museum (previously the Washington County Museum), and Tualatin Historical Society.
Tigard’s Outdoor Museum is a three-quarter-mile linear exhibition following the Tigard Heritage Trail, a former railroad bed that connects Main Street to employment and housing areas. The Outdoor Museum is supported in part by a $75,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant and funding from Washington County Visitors Association The Museum is tied together by upright steel panels created by Portland-based artist Suenn Ho, whose series of interpretive works include personal narratives that reflect the region’s complex history. Other artists funded through these grants are Jennifer Kuhns (mosaicist), and Christine Clark (metal sculptor). In accordance with the City of Tigard’s commitment to equitable engagement and access to community spaces, artists were selected after extensive review by a panel of community representatives, city staff and project partner Tualatin Valley Creates.
